Use steel wool, aluminum foil or sand paper. Fold your desired material in half so that you sharpen both sides at the same time. Cut into pieces until you reach the desired sharpness. I like sandpaper the best; it's the easiest. With foil and steel wool, you'll have to be more precise in your cutting. The goal is to sharpen the entire blade from back to tip in one motion.

To sharpen my knives, I use the underside of a ceramic mug - the "rough edges" in a circle that are unglazed. Using the "one long swoop", I go back and forth - try it, it works and you don't have to worry about cutting your fingers. My grandma did this and I've never had to have my knives sharpened "professionally".
Wow, Cheri, I love that tip! Thank you.
